The Martian by Andy Weir review

The Martian by Andy Weir

This is one of those books to dubiously consider at first. The basic premise--a lone astronaut finding some kind of alien surprise--haven't we read that about zillion times before? Somehow Andy Weir is able to amaze the reader with new twists.

Told in journal form, appearing to be the lonely ramblings of an astronaut awaiting rescue, and it manages to make the reader peek into the lead character's head in a way that would not otherwise be available. Even though he is a bit pessimistic with his assessment of the situation, he is the type of hero that still manages to find the only way out, that the reader still roots for throughout the narrative.

I enjoyed the many obstacles and setbacks that the hero had to make his way through. This is very reminiscent of a video game, where defeating each level with ingenuity is a new and fascinating little plotline. Even though some of the accomplishments are a little hard to swallow that one lone man could accomplish all of these things, it is a wonderful take on a hero for us all.
Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the publisher through the Blogging For Books program in exchange for an honest review.
