Weekend on the Moon

Image
When I was a little kid (born 1973), we all thought that we'd be living on the moon by the year 2000. We had just been to the moon several times, even though the last moon trip was 1972. There was enough science fiction that said we'd be all over the place by the mid-1990s.  So I love comic books like this that shows little vacations to the moon. I also envy the future. We are still in this technology infancy when going to the moon is still science fiction. One day, side trips to the moon will be standard. If only I could see the day.

Batman lets bad guy get shot just to prove a point

Image
In this episode of Batman, he fully knows that the bad guy is going to take out the other bad guy. He has so much foreknowledge that he makes sure that Robin brought a camera. And then, knowing full well what was going to happen, knowing enough to shout to Robin to take the picture, Batman allows the shooting and murder, just to prove a point and make the bad guy go to jail. Yeah, sure, they were bad guys. Scum. But is this Batman?

Character profile of Number Fourteen from The Prisoner episode "A.B. and C."

The Prisoner in “A.B. and C.” One of the most remarkable things about literary criticism is being able to squeeze meaning out of just a few syllables. Poetry is like that. The interpretations can sometimes take multiple pages when the poem itself is only a few lines, or words, long. Based on one line that gets used twice in this episode of The Prisoner, one can deduce a lot about a rather minor character. The doctor, Number Fourteen, is like this. Admittedly, there is nothing dynamic about this character. She is just the scientific doctor. Any person would do in this spot. We get a couple of splashes of character in lines like “Nothing like a good party,” but for the most part, these are generic lines that could be given to any character. It is the one line that gets repeated that tells great things about the inner moral struggle about Number Fourteen. “We all make mistakes; sometimes we have to.” Envision Number Fourteen as just an average scientist but with a fabulous new ...

I still think it's all a joke about these days off and they're going to laugh at me and say, "We tricked you, Butcher!"

Visual images in The Prisoner episode "A. B. and C."

Watching these episodes for the at least fiftieth time, it never ceases to amaze me that I can still find new things. This is specifically about the episode of The Prisoner  entitled "A. B. and C." I never put it together before, but near the end, when Number Six is walking with C towards the door, as he is told that once he goes over that he can never come back, there is a conga line. The distinctive conga music is playing, and these two, walking arm in arm, disrupt the conga line and continue walking. The visual image here is that Number Six is "crossing the line." Brilliant. Such a minor little thing, but once perceived the implications are staggering. Of course, the biggest visual image is the great camera shots when the red phone is the dominant image in the foreground. The phone line straight to Number Two's boss is looming, larger than life, and always right over Colin Gordon's Number Two. This is something Orson Welles would have done in Citize...

The Force Awakens --SPOILERS-- is a Reboot and a much better film

Before I see the movie:  Ok, so I have been waiting for this movie since 1983. Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The sequel to Return of the Jedi. I have tried not to pay too much attention to internet and rumors about this movie. I do not want it spoiled. I don't want chatter telling me what others think and taint my own expectations. However, I think the trailers have ruined a big surprise. So before the movie comes out, before I see it Friday night, December 18, 2015, in an IMAX theater (and then again on Saturday night because my wife won a contest for us to be Jedi VIPs at a closed theater), I want to write down what I think is going to happen. I am writing this on 12/14/15 about 7:30 pm but I will not hit the publish button until after I see it. And then I will write again about my analysis. First of all, this dark Jedi with the lightsaber that has the two extra lasers coming off the hilt--I think his name is Kylo Ren--must be Luke Skywalker. The trailer I watched wit...

"There's not a lot of value in the power of positive thinking when you're being put on trial for mass murder." (This was honestly said in a season two episode of Arrow I'm just now getting to. What...)
