Sputnik 1

 Sputnik 1 was launched by U.S.S.R. on Oct. 04, 1957 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, and became Earth's first artificial satellite.
 It was simply a test payload containing a radio beacon and a thermometer, and had been referred to by its designers as "ES" (elementary satellite).
